Japan Specialist

I’ve always sought out opportunities to travel — whether with family, friends, or solo. Asia, Europe, North Africa and South America, every destination has shaped my perspective and given me the chance to do what I love most — exploring new places, seeking adventure and immersing myself in local culture and cuisine.

Japan, though, is the one place that keeps drawing me back. Over the years I’ve traveled extensively across the country, from its vibrant cities to its small towns and rural villages. I’ve wandered through centuries-old shrines and temples, explored beautiful gardens, savored regional food, found the best places to shop, and uncovered hidden gems not listed in the guidebooks. Each trip deepens my appreciation for the country and leaves me eager to return.

As a Japan specialist, I look forward to designing a trip that reflects your interests and crafting an experience that feels uniquely yours.

Q&A with Jennifer

A local izakaya

What's the best local dish you've tasted?

I love so many Japanese dishes — sushi, ramen, tempura, yakitori, teppanyaki, and okonomiyaki — it’s hard to pick just one. But what really stands out to me is the experience of eating at a local izakaya. Some of my most memorable meals have been in these small restaurants: the best karaage fried chicken in Shikoku’s Iya Valley, fresh sushi in Kanazawa, and savory okonomiyaki in Osaka during a food tour (an experience Audley offers). For me, it’s not just about the food, it’s about discovering local flavours, finding hidden gems, and enjoying the atmosphere that makes each meal so special.

Chion-in Temple Garden

What’s your most vivid travel moment?

My most vivid travel moment was seeing the fall foliage in Kyoto. I’m from New England and have seen some incredible autumn colors, but nothing compares to autumn in Japan. The Chion-in Temple Garden is known for its nighttime foliage illuminations. Lights are carefully placed around the trees and pond to highlight the colors, and everything feels perfectly arranged. The reds, golds and oranges reflect in the water, making the whole scene feel almost unreal. It was truly breathtaking. This was my first time in Kyoto, and it felt like the perfect introduction to the beauty of Japan.

Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage

Where would you love to travel to next?

One of my greatest aspirations is to undertake the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage — a journey that will deepen my connection to Japan’s people, traditions, and landscapes. The beautiful island of Shikoku is known for its outdoor adventures, gardens, festivals, and historic sites, yet it remains largely untouched by tourism. With few visitors and an aging and declining population, the pilgrimage not only offers a transformative experience but also supports local communities. Pilgrims stay with residents who provide shelter, meals, and assistance along the way.
