Housed in a former government palace on the corner of the Praça do Comércio in the heart of Lisbon’s downtown Baixa area, the Pousada de Lisboa couldn't be more central. Behind the bright yellow façade of what was previously the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the building has been artfully converted into an elegant and sophisticated hotel. Inside you’ll find an eclectic selection of period furniture, antiques, contemporary reproductions and bright artworks that all help to tell the story of Portugal’s history.
Low vaulted ceilings, marble floors and dark wood elements add to the atmosphere but are lifted by chic modern touches. A light and airy internal courtyard with a domed glass roof is the setting for breakfast, while upstairs you’ll find a modern spa and gym complete with an indoor pool, sauna and small solarium on the roof.
The rooms are decorated in a classical style but to a high modern standard in light, muted tones. Within each room you’ll also find a smartphone pre-loaded with maps and apps for exploring the city.
Its excellent location and characterful charm all help to make the Pousada de Lisboa one of our top choices in the city.

Rooms
All the rooms in the Pousada de Lisboa have been designed in a classic but contemporary style. The parquet flooring, muted tones and uncluttered design make them calm and restful, while the marble bathrooms are modern and fully equipped and contain fluffy bathrobes and slippers. Making use of the historic surroundings, a number of rooms overlook the internal courtyard or surrounding buildings, while a selection look out over the Praça do Comércio to the River Tagus. A number of rooms also boast their own small balcony, while all have air conditioning and complimentary Wi-Fi.
Location
Located right on the corner of Praça do Comércio in the heart of downtown Lisbon, the location of the Pousada de Lisboa is unrivaled. The picturesque streets of the Baixa district surround the hotel while the buzzing Chaido and Bairro Alto districts can be easily reached on foot in around 10 to 15 minutes. A five-minute walk in the opposite direction will bring you to the start of the winding streets of the Alfama district and, if you have the legs for the climb, the Castelo de São Jorge at the top of the hill.
Food and drink
An extensive buffet breakfast is served each morning in the central courtyard atrium. During the day the contemporary RIB Beef & Wine restaurant at the front of the hotel serves a variety of steaks and local dishes with outdoor seating overlooking the Praça do Comércio. In the evenings, the brick-vaulted interior of the restaurant is particularly atmospheric for drinks or a meal. The hotel’s convenient location in the heart of Lisbon means that there are also plenty of other dining options nearby if you’d prefer to venture out and explore.
Facilities and activities
As well as a central location, the Pousada de Lisboa features a well-equipped gym, spa and indoor swimming pool. Guests can enjoy a range of treatments from massages to facials or take advantage of the relaxing sauna and Turkish bath. There is also a rooftop solarium.
