Seclusion, peace, and a forest setting in Galicia’s coastal countryside make Pepe Vieira Relais & Châteaux a standout hideaway.

Cocooned in lush woodland rich in wildlife, the individual suites of this adults-only hotel are designed to let the natural world do the talking. Known locally as galpones, the Galician word for sheds, these white concrete cubes combine minimalist interiors with glass feature walls that make you feel like you’re spending a night outdoors. As you gaze upon the forest from your bed, watch for rabbits and roe deer that roam the grounds.

Food is an enormous part of the experience and echoes the hotel’s dedication to the land. Michelin-starred Chef Pepe Vieira has developed a cooking style he calls “The Last Cuisine of the World” for his eponymous restaurant — using traditional local produce and rediscovered ancestral techniques to create an interactive journey through Galician gastronomic history.

You might start with a palate-cleanser in the organic gardens, brimming with herbs, leaves, and roots. Inside, you’ll sample dishes in the research kitchen, tuck into fish straight from the river, and sip wines that lead you on a tasting journey along the Camino de Santiago.

Little wonder this was one of the first restaurants in Spain to win a coveted green Michelin star for its sustainability measures.

Pepe Vieira offers a selection of one-bedroom standalone suites spread across woodland and gardens. Also known as galpones, these modernist architectural cubes are constructed of concrete and glass and designed to bring the outdoors in.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and glass sliding doors that lead onto private terraces make the most of the hotel’s setting right in the middle of the forest. All are spacious, flooded with light, and well-appointed with mountain views. The decor is minimalist with clean lines, natural tones, and Japanese-inspired features, including a tatami-style bed and all-black bathroom.

Location

Located just 14 km (29 miles) from Pontevedra, Pepe Vieira sits in a remote Galician location but is well-connected. The nearest airport takes just 40 minutes by car and Galicia’s capital, Santiago de Compostela, is an hour’s drive away. Set amid woodland and extensive gardens, the property links to countryside hiking routes and is a 10-minute drive from several vineyards and the Monastery of Santa Maria de Armenteira.

Food and drink

  • Pepe Vieira Restaurant has two Michelin stars and one green star and serves a selection of tasting menus. The indoor dining area features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking woodland. Outdoor seating is available.
