Soneva Kiri is the first resort of its kind on Koh Kood. The journey to Soneva Kiri is by light aircraft from Bangkok to a neighboring island, and then by speedboat to the arrival pier where your desert island experience begins. Set in 41 hectares of natural grounds the resort is made up of 36 pool villas, on the beachfront or set into the hills that rise from the sea. The resort is made up of enormous tented pavillions that give it an air of being in an exotic camp. The service is attentive and personal, friendly and efficient, while life here revolves around exploring this natural paradise and relaxing in the beautiful and luxurious surroundings.

OUR OPINION:

This is an incredible venture in about as remote a spot as you can find in Thailand, with lots of facilities. Soneva know how to think of things to delight and entertain and this shows through in every detail.

Location

The island of Koh Kood is near the Cambodian border with Thailand. This unspoilt tropical paradise is pure jungle and white sands; the pretty beach is lapped by warm waters and backed by a coconut plantation. It's a remote place, but the island has local villages, shops and restaurants to explore.

Food and drink

There are five restaurants offering a variety of organic gourmet experiences. They can be sampled in a treetop restaurant, on the moonlit beach or in the privacy of your villa. Cooking courses are also available.

A wide selection of water sports including catamaran sailing, sea kayaking, windsurfing, water-skiing, wake boarding and snorkeling is available for a fee. Enjoy nature experiences and guided treks with the resident marine biologist and permaculturalist. Learn about the amazing flora and fauna on the island — there are dozens of bird species and a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians and animals — and enjoy guided treks through the jungle to explore some of the wonderful hidden waterfalls, mangroves and forests. If you prefer you can visit the local village, learn about the stars at the observatory, take cookery classes or watch classic films under a canopy of stars at the informal outdoor cinema.

Families

Located in a uniquely-designed bamboo structure shaped like a manta ray, the kids' club perches in an elevated position among the jungle. Inspired by ideas invited from children for their dream play area, The Den is an incredible experience for children of all ages.

Environmental and social responsibility

Soneva are committed to sustainable development, and Soneva Kiri has many examples of this philosophy in practice. Waste water is broken down biologically in the reed beds, which then forms feed for bamboo shoots. The bamboo is used in building projects. Waste from the restaurant is recycled by earthworms and the resulting fertilizer goes to use on the vegetable and herb gardens.

Local people are employed when possible, both in the construction of the resort and in jobs at the resort. Local materials were used in the buildings, helping their green credentials, as well as giving the place a natural feel.
