At the time the region was the source of the finest wool in Europe and as the local merchants grew rich they built elaborate mansions and churches as well as villages of idyllic honey-stone cottages. As the wool trade declined and the region was subsequently largely bypassed by the Industrial Revolution, its thatched cottages, beautiful churches and stately mansions remained undisturbed.
In many villages low stone bridges cross meandering streams that run alongside streets flanked by romantic thatched cottages, lop-sided stone houses and age-old pubs with an endearing charm. The region is however, understandably popular with visitors, and although the main towns are undeniably picturesque they can be crowded.
