Mchenja ("ebony tree" in the local language) lies hidden in a shady grove of age-old ebony trees on the bank of the Luangwa River. It is one of the most picturesque sites for a camp in the Luangwa, with the rooms among the most luxurious you will find in any bushcamp. Baboon play in the clearings, hippo grunt in the river below and kingfishers and bee-eaters swoop over the waters.

The camp has five spacious tented rooms, each with polished wooden floors and a veranda at the front which overlooks the lawn and river beyond. You can take a shower under the stars in the open-air en suite bathrooms, which are also equipped with WC and basin. Alternatively, each room boasts a large bath, perfect for whiling away a couple of hours after lunch before your afternoon activity, or for sinking into in the cooler winter evenings. The main chitenge is under reed and thatch, with a plunge pool that provides great relief during the hotter months. Activities from camp include walking safaris and game drives.
