Fowey Hall

Fowey Hall

Cornwall, The UK

Family-friendly rarely comes with refinement, but that’s what you’ll find at Fowey Hall on the coast of west Cornwall.

With panoramic views across the Fowey Estuary, this resplendent Victorian mansion is believed to be the inspiration for Toad Hall from children’s book The Wind in The Willows — and it certainly delivers a sense of grandeur and spacious grounds to match.

Beyond the grand exterior and sloping lawns, you’ll discover interiors that are relaxed and welcoming and with enough space to cleverly combine fun and games for little ones with premium pampering for adults.

You’ll find an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, cinema, library, spa and sauna — from where you can admire the sea views — alongside plenty of sun-facing spots to curl up with a book or enjoy afternoon tea. Parents will appreciate the games room, adventure playground, and supervised nursery, as well as the buckets and fishing nets kids can take to the sandy coves, just a short stroll away.

Two dining spaces — a family room and candlelit one for grown-ups — focus on Cornish classics, with ingredients supplied by local fishermen and farmers, from Fowey mussels to a catch of the day battered in local ale.

A variety of rooms cater for up to three children, and the decor is decidedly British. Handcrafted beds by local artisans, large bathtubs, sash windows, marble fireplaces, and high ceilings are just some of the features to admire in the old hall, while light-drenched Bay Suites perched atop the spa come with sea views.

OUR OPINION:

Fowey Hall — pronounced ‘foy’ — delivers joy, with happy kids and even happier parents loving the Victorian grandeur of this beachside slice of British heritage. Try the fish and chips battered in local Cornish beer for a timeless classic.

Rooms

Fowey Hall has a well-considered mix of rooms and suites spread across the main house and courtyard wing. Many are family-sized and suitable for up to three children, some with two bedrooms. All are spacious, light-filled, and come with garden or sea views.

Rooms in the main house combine historic features — sash windows, oak panels, marble fireplaces, and corniced ceilings — with a calming earthy palette alongside beds hand-carved by British artisans. One room has a sitting area tucked away in an original Victorian turret.

Perched atop the spa, suites in the courtyard wing are spacious, modern, and light-drenched. One comes with a private sea-facing balcony.
