Located on the Herengracht, the Ambassade Hotel combines classic canal-side charm with a convenient location, just a short walk from the city’s main sights. The hotel once occupied a single house along the city’s main canal but has since expanded to include ten of Amsterdam’s distinctive canal houses.
The original hotel building has an elegant white façade, while the canal houses on either side are red-bricked buildings with tall windows. Inside, the hotel has a stylish and relaxed atmosphere, and as you enter, you’ll see a lounge with glass-protected bookshelves built into the walls — the shelves hold the owner’s personal collection of more than 5,000 signed books.
The personal touches continue into the artwork, as the walls are adorned with the works of Belgian and Danish artists from the mid-20th-century avant-garde CoBrA movement, also collected by the owner. The artwork combined with the winding hallways makes you feel as if you’re walking through an art collector’s home, rather than a hotel.
Owing to the historical architecture of the canal houses, no two of the 56 rooms in the hotel are alike, and each room is individually decorated.
We like this hotel not only for its excellent location, but for its focus on art and culture. The extensive collection of Dutch and Belgian artwork and the lounge full of books signed by visiting authors gives the hotel an intimate feel.

Rooms
The 56 rooms and suites are traditionally styled, with features including chartreuse drapes, red-cushioned chairs and teal bedding. There are seven different room categories, distinguished by size and view type. Some look over the courtyard, while others have canal views. The Split-Level Superior room spans two floors, while the Triple and Quadruple rooms are good for families.
The Grand Suite is on the top floor and has a separate bedroom and living room, and the Apartment boasts a living room, dining room, bedroom, bathroom and full kitchen, as well as four large French windows overlooking the Herengracht.
All rooms have en suite bathrooms, air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
Location
Situated on the Herengracht, this hotel is in a refined and stylish area of the city. It’s only a couple of minutes’ walk to the city’s shops and bars, but its canal-side location is quiet and secluded. The canal itself is lined with 17th-century gable houses rising tall and narrow along a cobblestone street.
It's about a five-minute walk to Bloemenmarkt, an 11-minute walk to the Anne Frank House, a 15-minute walk to the Rembrandt House Museum, a 22-minute walk to the central train station and a nine-minute walk to De Wallen, the red-light district.
