The village of Shaxi is fabled as one of the key stopping points on the so called 'tea-horse' route — ancient trade routes that ferried caravans of pu'er tea from the south of Yunnan and onto Tibet, Nepal, Myanmar as well as other parts of China.

Today the village receives surprisingly few visitors, and you are unlikely to see many tourists, either domestic or foreign. It is pristinely preserved, reminiscent of a bygone era in China.

Local Pumi ladies, ShaxiYou will most likely see plenty of local minority people in traditional dress, especially if you happen to be in town on Friday, which is market day.
