Driving southeast from Kunming you pass through one of China’s most dramatic landscapes. Sculpted rice terraces cling to the undulating hillsides, their glittering waters dancing with the brilliant reflected sunlight.

This is the remote area of Yuanyang, home to the Hani people whose distinctive triangular thatched homes are clustered in villages fascinating to visit.

Around Yuanyang

Hani Minority village, Qingkou near YuanyangContinuing through the striking countryside, Tonghai is a sleepy little town unaccustomed to visitors. Wander the quiet pedestrian streets, or take a pony cart ‘taxi’ to visit Xiushan Park.

With its beautiful setting and natural spring water, this is especially popular with locals who gather to play mahjong or perform impromptu operas.
