Ubuntu Mobile Camp, Tanzania

Ubuntu Mobile Camp

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

In Swahili, the word Ubuntu represents generosity and kindness, a feeling the camp evokes with its inviting atmosphere and hospitality.

The eight tented suites enjoy ever-changing views of the Serengeti and surround a main mess area of dining and lounge tents. Each canvas suite has a king-sized bed and its own en suite bathroom with a traditional safari bucket shower.

The camp moves three times a year around the vast plains, intercepting the herd of wildebeest as they graze, breed and interact with other animals. These large herds attract predators and big cats are a frequent sight on game drives.

OUR OPINION:

Staying at Ubuntu Camp isn't about the bells and whistles of a luxury stay, but rather being in the middle of the migration with experienced guides who will take you to see what you came for. The service here is excellent and the food is delicious.

Rooms

There are just eight suites in tents set overlooking the vast plains, with simple decor and fitted with lots of thoughtful details to make your stay comfortable. Each has an en suite bathroom with flush toilets, basins and safari bucket showers. The camp is solar-powered, but with back-up generators, to allow you to charge camera batteries easily after a day on safari. Laundry is also available.

Location

This mobile camp is situated either in the west of the national park, the far north of the Serengeti or the southern plains of the Ndutu area. Beginning its own migration in May, and before moving on in July, Ubuntu sets up close to the Nyakoroma Hills and the border of the national park. Between August and the end of November the camp is located in the northern section of the Serengeti, about a 45-minute drive from the Mara River. Between December and March, it is located about two hours south of Ndutu in an area close to Lake Eyasi, outside of the Serengeti but within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is a quieter area with fewer vehicles but still a prime area to see the migration with the added benefit of being located away from the crowds.

Food and drink

The camp sources its fresh produce from local communities during their stay in the north, though everything is home-cooked throughout the year. Breakfast is served following morning game drives, though a packed option is available for those who want more time in the bush. Take a light buffet lunch in the shade before afternoon activities, or during an extended drive. Guests enjoy a sit-down three-course dinner or barbecue each evening and the chefs are happy to cater for any dietary requirements.

Facilities and activities

Activities are focused around game drives lead by the knowledgeable guides from Ubuntu Camp, exploring this game-rich area in the northern Serengeti, where off-road driving is permitted, or in the southern plains around Ndutu. When the camp is in the south, it’s also possible to go walking in the hills behind camp. If your stay happens while the camp is in the north, guests can visit villages to experience day-to-day life of the local Kuria people.

Environmental and social responsibility

Ubuntu is recognized by Responsible Tourism Tanzania and Fair Trade Tourism for their work on sustainability and community, particularly in supporting local farmers in the north. The camp runs on solar power and is easily dismantled, leaving nothing behind in the bush.
