Bujera Fort

Bujera Fort

Udaipur, India

Only a 15-minute drive from the City Palace, Bujera Fort is a newly built fortress and a creation of outstanding interior designer Richard Hanlon and Trish McFarlane. Constructed on purely traditional lines it has 86 hand carved stone columns and many Jarokas in local stone.

You can choose from the many dining spaces. There is a breakfast room for dining when the weather is fresh. They also have a private dining room for those special occasions and a dining pavilion open to the gardens where meals can be served. Home-grown or locally sourced continental and Indian dishes are served and there is a bar as well.

In the central courtyard there is a swimming pool, beautifully designed like a step well. Surrounding this are flower-filled gardens with many secluded areas and fountains  a dreamy place to read a book or contemplate the views. Inside there is a library, a games table and a varied selection of books with its working fireplace for colder winter evenings.

OUR OPINION:

We love it because it's run so that it feels like your own home with full, but unobtrusive service and staff to make you feel totally cared for, but not smothered. Being a mere 8 km (5 miles) from the Lake Pichola, it's an oasis of calm after a day's sightseeing in Udaipur.

Rooms

The 14 rooms consist of Cloister bedrooms and Suites with marble bathrooms. The bedrooms have private balconies, whereas the suites are more spacious and offer a cozy working fireplace. Some of the suites have private gardens, verandas and plunge pools so are perfect for friends or families.

Location

In one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Bujera Fort is situated west of Udaipur and is easily accessible, just 15 minutes’ drive from the City Palace and Lake Pichola.

Food and drink

Trying to promote a policy of farm to fork, a considerable proportion of their produce is either home grown or sourced from within 20 miles, organic wherever possible. The hotel serves both continental and Indian food with a small menu that means the produce will be fresh and freshly cooked, with as little oil and ghee as possible, promoting a regime of wellness without being evangelical about it.

Instead of a set menu, dishes are adapted to guests’ tastes; lunch has a European bent whereas Indian flavors dictate dinner. Living up to its farm-to-fork philosophy, the hotel makes its own jams, marmalades, cakes, and biscuits.

Facilities and activities

Guests are encouraged to join their yoga sessions that take place at dawn. Set within the pretty gardens is a swimming pool for relaxation after a day's sightseeing in Udaipur. Alternatively, you can enjoy reading a book by the fireplace in their well-stocked library that has a wide selection of books both vintage and the latest modern publications, or pamper your body and soul at the spa, with some relaxing massage therapies.
