With a crenelated roof, square tower and stone balconies, Masseria Salamina looks more like a medieval castle than the 400-year-old Pugliese masseria it is. Although the property was constructed as a fortress to defend the land against invading pirates, today it serves as a beautiful, historic accommodation for those wishing to enjoy the countryside of Puglia with an old-world charm.

The picturesque exterior is surrounded by palm fronds and bougainvillea which lend bright pops of purple, pink and green to the soft sandstone of the structure. Inside, the history of the property is maintained with plush, tufted sofas and chairs, tapestried wallpapers, oil paintings, and chandeliers. However, pale tones throughout and plenty of natural light keep this charming historical decor from feeling heavy. The same light palette runs through most of the 20 rooms, each of which is somewhat unique. Rooms are located throughout the property, allowing for spacious interiors and outdoor terraces in many rooms.

Facilities abound at the Masseria Salamina. The grounds offer plenty of grassy, open space for relaxing and a large swimming pool sits nestled among olive trees. The property prides itself on its agricultural tradition, which is maintained today through the organic farm on site which provides produce used in the hotel’s restaurant and champions environmental sustainability. Cooking and tasting activities are also available at the property.

OUR OPINION:

With its enviable countryside location close to the beach, we like Masseria Salamina for modern day facilities and activities surrounded by historic, old-world charm.

Rooms

Rooms at Masseria Salamina fall into three groups in three different parts of the property. The manor rooms have a more historical style and are located in the old manor house. Classic rooms have a slightly more contemporary style and a mezzanine level located in what were once the stables of the masseria. Apartments are well suited to families and offer a small kitchenette and more spacious interiors. Almost all rooms offer some outdoor area in the form of either a terrace or balcony for enjoying the outdoors.

Location

The masseria is located in the countryside just outside the town of Fasano, equidistant from the larger towns of Bari to the north and Brindisi to the south. Situated just over three miles away from the sandy beaches of the Adriatic Sea, which are visible in the distance from the property, the hotel is also well located for those wishing to visit the beach.

Food and drink

The restaurant of the hotel focuses on organic, local ingredients combined to create delicious, traditional Pugliese dishes. A large part of the ingredients for the restaurant are actually produced on-site at the property’s working farm. In cooler weather a bright dining room hosts lunch and dinner, while in warmer weather, meals can be enjoyed in the pleasant courtyard. In the mornings, a full buffet breakfast is served in the same setting following the same local, organic ethos.

Facilities and activities

The Masseria Salamina provides all the activities one would expect of an upscale agriturismo. Many activities focus on the agricultural and culinary aspects of the property such as cooking classes, wine tastings in the wine cellar, olive oil tastings, and opportunities to hike throughout the expansive grounds. There are also stables and horseback riding available, as well as a large outdoor pool and bike rental.
